When I bought my first NI, I was under the belief that I was buying a breed that had no health problems and was on the cusp of becoming a KC recognised breed. Sadly this was not the case at all!
Over the past two years I found out that not only was there NO chance of the breed gaining KC recognition, but there has been excessive inbreeding, pedigrees have been falsified to cover up the extent of the inbreeding and there are a lot of health problems within the breed that has been made much worse by the inbreeding and lies to cover up these problems!
The extent of the health problems within these dogs was made much clearer to me when I had my first NI litter. After one of my bitches was bred her sister was diagnosed with epilepsy; then sadly after the pups were born two of her son’s from her first litter were also diagnosed with epilepsy and are now at the Rainbow Bridge. This meant that my bitch was a carrier of the epilepsy gene; her pups were therefore re-homed under a contract that stated they were to be neutered and NOT to be bred from (this bitch has now been retired into a loving pet home and will no longer be bred from). Because of the risk that the pups may have this horrible disease I did not take any money for them, as I believed it unethical. There is no way of knowing if they are affected (unless, God forbid they start having fits), or whether they are carriers or clear. I am telling you this because I believe the general public and possible puppy buyers of NI's desserve and have a right to know what is really going on behind the scenes!
Our AimsThere
have been a lot of owners coming
forward about
their dog’s that are ill, some of which have had to be put to
sleep or died
suddenly, and many of them under 12 months old due to epilepsy, hip
dysplasia, bleeding
disorders,
muscle
wasting disorders
and Addisons Disease. There are two NI groups that register these dogs,
unfortunatly they are still denying that there is a problem
with health or that the gene pool is too
small to
be viable and is one of the reasons why there are becoming more and
more young
dogs dyeing or being put to sleep because of inherited
diseases,
the other two
is inbreeding and bad breeding practises which have resulted in whole
litters
dyeing.
A leading and well respected geneticist advised that the only way forward for these dogs is to breed unrelated dog’s to unrelated dogs, however, as all NI’s are related to one another and predigrees have been falsified, so that some dog’s could be more related to each other than it say’s on their pedigrees, it is just not possible to follow this advice..... Unless you turn to a completely different breed i.e. outcross! And this is exactly what the geneticist has recommended. Sadly there are many that have not taken this onboard and are STILL denying that there is a problem, so a number of breeders have now broken away and are looking at other breeds or crosses that are suitable for the health, temperament and looks that we want. This will of course be done very carefully with the best interest of the dog’s and pups concerned.
As
I have said above, I aim to outcross my
current dogs
with a different breed/s or crossbreed/s. My long term aim is to
establish a
type rather than a breed of dog, which will not only look natural but
will also
be healthy and have a temperament and trainability suitable for owners
that are
dedicated to care for this type of dog, and put in the time it takes to
train
the dog at least basic training and the correct behaviour needed to
live within
the family peacefully and happily.
Obviously I do not expect this to happen overnight, it is going to take time to establish these things to a reliable standard. I would like to stress the point that I am NOT creating a new breed of dog, but I am looking to breed a type of dog. At the present time I am looking at adding two different crossbreeds – NI x Saarloos Wolfdog and NI x Czech Wolfdog. The reason why I have chosen to add these crosses instead of full Saarloos or Czech, is because I personally would not cross a full Saarloos or Czech with ANY breed never mind a breed that is not a true breed, and was created using poor quality and none health tested dogs from unknown origin and a mixture of several other breeds such as the NI has been.
The puppies that I breed will be of great priority and ALL will be homed to the best of my ability with their best interest at the forefront. There will always be pups in all breeds/types of dog that do not meet the “standard” for breeding; these pups will be homed into good pet homes only!!! The pups that I believe fulfill the “standard” I am looking for will either stay with me or go to trusted fellow breeders to “run on” where possible. All puppies will go with a sales contract of care and responsibility, both on the part of the puppy buyer and me as the breeder.
